Love to exercise? Love your dog? Never seem to have enough time for either?
Well, Jen Jones can help. She has brought a new Canadian franchise to Brandon called
6 Legs to Fitness.
Dog trainer and television host Brad Pattison started the franchise. He’s best known for the six-season series “At the End of my Leash” on Canada’s Slice Television, but also the creator of 6 Legs to Fitness. This is an exercise program designed for you and your dog and for people with busy schedules.
“The whole idea behind this program is to create a bond, a synergy between you and your dog,” Jones said. “While it’s not about dog training, the animals will learn to respect you and listen to you more.”
Jones has taken various courses to become certified, both on physical fitness (for humans!) and basic dog training. Her intent is to offer outdoor classes while the weather is good. And if there’s enough interest, she may move to an indoor facility for the winter.
“It’s a combination of strength training and cardio,” Jones said. “It is similar to boot camp where we’ll do different exercises for your upper body, core and legs. The difference is that your dog is working out with you.”
To take part in the classes all you need is a long leash and water for both yourself and your pooch. If you don’t have a dog, though, don’t fret. Either bring your friends or neighbours or feel free to participate on your own.
“It’s a really hard workout,” Jones said. “It’s about getting fit and spending a bit more time with your pet.”
For the month of September, the classes will run every Monday at 11 a.m. and Wednesday at 6 p.m. with the first class starting on Sept. 1. All classes will take place at Stanley Park (15th Street & Princess Avenue); the cost is $10 per class.

Two different spectrums
Keval and Arpita Patel are definitely an exceptional couple with a strong business sense. Arpita is a pharmacist, Keval has a masters in chemistry and together they own two businesses in Brandon that are very different indeed.
Their most recent adventure in entrepreneurship led them to buy Canadian restaurant franchise Pizza Pizza. It just opened on Aug. 15 and is located at 510 First St., right beside Coffee Culture. After seemingly sitting half vacant for a couple of years, this strip mall at the corner of First Street and Victoria Avenue seems to have become the place to be.
Keval spent six weeks in Toronto and had to pass a number of exams with 95 per cent before he could continue with his plans to open the chain restaurant. He then spent one month training at a restaurant in Winnipeg. Keval said the franchise has always been one of his favourites.
“Each and every store is the same as far as taste and quality,” Keval said. “The dough is really, really good. The dipping sauces are amazing and there’s a good variety of them.”
Pizza Pizza has 15 employees, and while the business is currently split equally between deliveries and walk-in, Keval said the walk-in specials can save customers close to $10 on every pizza.
The Patel family immigrated to Canada in 2008 from India. A year later, after Arpita completed her licensing to become a pharmacist in Canada, they put down roots in Brandon.
“This is a really good city and the people here are so nice,” Keval said. “Of all the cities that we’ve lived in, we’ve never found people so friendly. We knew just after a few months that we wanted to make Brandon our hometown.”
They opened their first business, The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy, in 2012. Arpita was looking for a pharmacy that focused on the customers’ health.
“We wanted a business that was strictly a pharmacy,” Keval said.
“When people are coming for a prescription, they are concerned about their health and we wanted to focus on that as well and not worry about offering other products.”
The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy is across from Superstore at 547-Eighth St. For more information on Pizza Pizza, call 204-729-1111.
