A man who briefly escaped a drug raid has been hit with a fine for the cocaine police found in his apartment.
In Brandon court on Thursday, Lenny Darryl Betts pleaded guilty to possessing the cocaine.
Based on a tip, police raided Betts’ Alaska Bay home on July 18.
Through surveillance, officers determined that Betts and another man were inside the apartment. Police then used a battering ram to burst through the door, but Betts and the other man managed to escape through a window.
The escape was short lived as officers managed to catch up with Betts nearby.
Court heard that police hadn’t identified themselves before busting through the door and apparently out of shock, Betts and the other man fled.
Betts stopped running when he looked over his shoulder and spotted police and was arrested. The other man later returned to the apartment but was released without charges.
In a kitchen cupboard in the apartment, police found eight grams of cocaine wrapped in plastic and they seized $1,794 dollars in cash.
They also found a large metal safe in the bedroom which contained powder residue which tested positive for cocaine.
Betts told authorities that the cocaine was for his own use. Much of the cash seized was profit from the sale of a boat and intended for child support and other expenses, although some of it had been used to buy the drugs.
Betts has since moved away from Brandon and some people considered to be bad influences.
Judge John Combs fined Betts $600 for having the cocaine.
