Assiniboine Community College’s Brittney Ross, second from right, who graduated from the hotel and restaurant management program, earned a gold medal in the restaurant service category at the recent World Skills Americas Competition in San Paulo, Brazil.
Assiniboine Community College hotel and restaurant management graduate Brittney Ross, who represented the college on Team Canada at this year’s World Skills Americas competition, came home with a gold medal in the restaurant service category.
The World Skills Americas competition showcases students under the age of 22 from North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
Eight countries competed in the restaurant service category and competitors completed an intense four days, with three luncheon services and one day of individual tasks.
Participating competitors must have medalled either silver or bronze in their respective countries. Ross competed in the 2012 Skills Canada National Competition in May as a student and was awarded a bronze medal in the restaurant service category.
This led to her being chosen to participate as a Canadian team competitor for the World Skills America Competition in San Paulo, Brazil.
Preparation for the competition was quite extensive and involved many hours of training.
"Competing in this year’s World Skills Americas Competition was an incredible experience for me," said Ross, a 2012 ACC graduate.
"It was an honour to represent ACC and Team Canada — bringing home a gold medal was the icing on the cake!"
Ross’ instructor, Kyle Zalluski, attended the competition as her coach, as well as a Canadian expert and judge of the restaurant service competition.
"This is the first time we’ve had a team competitor at World Skills and we’re incredibly proud of Brittney’s accomplishment," Zalluski said.
"This medal demonstrates that our students and graduates are excelling in their fields and can compete at the national and international level."
Ross is originally from Erickson and is currently working as a manager at Lady of the Lake Café and Pub in Brandon.
The World Skills Americas competition is held every two years. This year’s competition was held Nov. 12-18.
