Assiniboine Community College has become an official testing centre for the International English Language Testing System in Brandon.
Prior to this, the closest venue that administered the IELTS was in Winnipeg.
The most popular English proficiency test, IELTS is used to measure English language proficiency for academic, employment and general purposes. This test is used extensively by post-secondary institutions, employers, professional organizations and government agencies, such as Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
IELTS is jointly owned by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and the Cambridge English Language Assessment through locations in more than 130 countries.
ACC has partnered with the British Council to administer the test in Brandon and surrounding communities. The British Council works to create cultural relationships for the United Kingdom and other countries worldwide, through international opportunities and long-term strategic partnerships.
ACC will offer two types of tests; the Academic IELTS, which will assess English language skills for people entering a post-secondary institution and the General Training IELTS, which is ideal for immigrants entering an English-speaking community or job.
“The overall goal for ACC offering the International English Language Testing System is simple,” says Shawn Brake, director of adult learning for Assiniboine Community College. “This will allow people from Brandon and the surrounding communities the opportunity to take the IELTS close to home and to have an accurate measure of their English language abilities to reach their respective goals.”
The IELTS is administered over the course of three hours and will be offered at ACC’s Victoria Avenue East campus one Saturday each month, beginning April 27.
ACC will also offer IELTS preparation classes in the coming months for those who need help preparing for the test.
