Accused feels 'free' after guilty plea, jail sentence

A man who’d been on the lam for more than five years before getting caught says he’s relieved to deal with his criminal charges, even though it means he’ll spend some time in jail.

“I know I’m in jail, but I feel free,” Sean Guthrie Todd told Judge Krystyna Tarwid in Brandon provincial court on Thursday.

Todd, 28, pleaded guilty to counts of assault, obstruct or resist a peace officer and to a breach of a bail order which all date back to April 2007.

He also pleaded guilty to failing to attend court in July 23, 2007, and to uttering threats and a breach of a curfew from Sept. 29.

On April 2, 2007, Todd was arrested at a Brandon home after his girlfriend of the time complained that he’d choked her, beat her and pulled out her earring.

Todd, intoxicated, put up a struggle during his arrest and kicked the legs of two police officers.

He was released but breached his bail order by having contact with his girlfriend about a month later.

After entering pleas to the original assault and resist/obstruct police officer charges, he failed to show up for sentencing on July 23, 2007.

A warrant was issued, but Todd couldn’t be found as he’d moved to Edmonton. He was caught when he returned to Manitoba after recently receiving word that his mom was seriously ill.

On Sept. 29, police were called to a Hamiota-area home. Todd had been drinking and got in a dispute with family during which he threatened to break his sister’s hand.

He fled the home but was arrested the next day. Meanwhile, police had learned of his outstanding charges and an old bail order that required him to live at a Brandon hotel, a curfew he had technically been breaching for about five years.

He has been in custody since his Sept. 30 arrest.

Court heard that Todd had a terrible upbringing, but he’s sought treatment for alcohol abuse and managed to secure some education that allows him to work in the oil fields.

Judge Tarwid sentenced him to a total of five months of jail followed by one year of probation with orders to take substance abuse and domestic violence counselling.
