Alcohol-fuelled behaviour earns woman jail time, driving ban

A woman who was drunk driving when she crashed her ex-boyfriend’s car into a pole has been jailed for that and other crimes that also included a “vicious” assault.

Alcohol seemed to be the spark for Jessie Elizabeth Boubard’s bad behaviour, Crown attorney Grant Hughes said.

“She gets into trouble when she drinks,” Hughes told Brandon court on Tuesday.

Boubard, 26, was sentenced for driving without a licence, taking an automobile without consent and driving with an alcohol level over the legal limit for the crash.

For separate incidents, she was also sentenced for failing to attend court, assault causing bodily harm and a couple of counts of breaching a release order by drinking.

Her troubles began when she crashed the 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt in the early morning of Nov. 24.

A witness said Boubard was driving at a high rate of speed when she lost control and hit a sign pole near First Street and Kirkcaldy Drive.

The car wound up in the ditch and Boubard — who smelled of alcohol, was unsteady on her feet and had a can of beer in her pocket — was found by police at the scene.

On the way to the police station, Boubard pressed her lips against the police car’s plexiglass divider and repeatedly asked officers, “Can I have a kiss?”

At the station, she repeatedly fell asleep as officers tried to get her to supply breath samples. They finally obtained readings that showed Boubard had more than double the legal limit of alcohol in her system.

About a week later, Boubard’s former boyfriend returned from a work trip to find out his car had been in a crash and was impounded.

Boubard didn’t have permission to use the car.

She then got in trouble for missing court on Dec. 12 and for assaulting another woman on April 18.

During the assault, Boubard broke the victim’s nose when she kicked her in the body and face.

In addition, Boubard was on three separate court orders not to drink when police found her intoxicated in the early morning of June 9 as they investigated an ATV theft.

Boubard ran into a wall twice as she failed to run away and she has been in custody since.

She was intoxicated for each of her encounters with police, and Judge John Combs described the crash as “outrageous” and the assault as “vicious.”

“You’ve got some serious issues that you need to work out,” Combs commented as he sentenced Boubard to a total of 95 days in jail on top of 25 days she’d already spent in presentence custody.

She was also banned from driving for 18 months, fined $200 for driving without a licence and put on probation for 18 months.
