Steinbach police have a man in custody they say was pretending to be a doctor — and they think there may be victims in the Brandon area.
Leslie Colmer, 66, was arrested on Tuesday after an intensive investigation in and around Steinbach, police say.
They had been tipped off by a person who had visited Colmer for what they believed was a doctor’s appointment. However, the victim says they were concerned about Colmer’s behaviour and about the medications he apparently prescribed.
During their investigation, police say that they found Colmer did not have a medical licence, but that he was seeing and treating patients in Steinbach, Winnipeg, Selkirk and surrounding rural areas.
Police believe there are more potential victims in the Winnipeg, Steinbach, Selkirk, Brandon and Beausejour areas.
Colmer remains in custody, and he currently faces 14 counts of fraud and one count of assault. Police say that further charges may be laid, and that a court date has not yet been set.
Steinbach RCMP were assisted in the investigation by RCMP Winnipeg Major Crimes Unit, D Division Federal, Serious and Organized Crime Unit, Winnipeg Commercial Crime Section, and Selkirk RCMP, as well as the Ontario Provincial Police.
The investigation is ongoing.
