Animal control officers and police were called to wrangle up several escaped cows from the Heartland Livestock yards, one of which was shot twice after charging officers, vehicles and pedestrians near New Era School on Monday afternoon.

Police were called around 1:11 p.m. with a report of loose cows near the railway tracks at 13th Street North and Stickney Avenue.
"They believe there was actually three cattle involved and they had escaped from a truck at the livestock yards," said Const. Ron Burgess, Brandon Police Service spokesman. "They started moving around and actually one was causing problems."
While two of the cows were not a concern, one black cow managed to run for several blocks — across Pacific, Rosser and Princess avenues.
"One of the cattle was acting aggressively towards people and apparently rammed at least one vehicle," Burgess said. "It had to be put down."
Before it made its way to Victoria Avenue, the cow was shot by an animal control officer on the 400-block of Sixth Street, near École New Era School.
Burgess said workers from Heartland Livestock Services were attempting to capture the two other cows.
