Be wary of those selling natural gas contracts, PUB says

The Manitoba Public Utilities Board is warning homeowners about door-to-door agents claiming to be representing Manitoba Hydro or Centra Gas.

Hollis Singh, PUB executive director, said the salespersons are independent natural gas marketers, who are trying to sell five-year or three-year contracts.

While the marketers work for companies regulated by the PUB, Singh stressed they are not affiliated with Manitoba Hydro or Centra Gas.

“It’s misleading the customer, which is prohibited,” Singh said.

“We have a code of conduct for retailing natural gas and that would be in violation of that.”

Manitoba Hydro and Centra Gas do not go door-to-door for this purpose.

The independent agents provide a multi-year natural gas contract with a fixed price.

“The price is not always the same as Centra Gas,” Singh said. “It could be higher or lower, depending on what the gas market is doing, and the gas market changes every day.”

If homeowners are approached by door-to-door salespersons, Singh said they should listen carefully.

“They do not work for Manitoba Hydro, they do not work for Centra Gas, they do not work for the Public Utilities Board,” he said. “If they do come to the door and the homeowner is of the opinion that they have been mislead … they can contact the PUB.”

The agent is required to leave a business card, which includes an agent number with the homeowner.

“That number is given out by the company, so that will help in dealing with the complaint,” he said.
