Bill to create national military driver's licence program passes

A private member’s bill sponsored by Brandon West Progressive Conservative MLA Reg Helwer passed unanimously in the Manitoba legislature yesterday.

The bill urges the provincial government to work with other provinces, the federal government and the Department of National Defence in creating a national driver’s licence program for military personnel, so they no longer have to get new licences when they are posted to different provinces.

“Military personnel make many sacrifices in the defence of our country and this is one way we can give something back and thank them for their service,” Helwer said in a release.

There are currently more than 5,300 regular and reserve military personnel in Manitoba.
