Blood donation groups to be honoured today

Organizations in Brandon and Westman that have made a commitment to donating blood are to be honoured by Canadian Blood Services at a special luncheon today.

Three local groups chosen to be recognized for their dedication, creativity and support to the blood system over the past year. Currently, there are more than 100 organizations known as Partners For Life that participate in donating blood as a team. Collectively, they gave more than 3,200 donations in 2012.

This year, blood recipient Wendy Bell of Hamiota will tell her story during the formal program of the luncheon, being held at Remington’s Seafood and Steakhouse in The Town Centre from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Wendy’s son Jayson was diagnosed with leukemia when he was only four years old.

He needed blood to help him through chemotherapy. Just two years later, Wendy was shocked with another life-threatening diagnosis — she had a rare condition called acute myelofibrosis, and would need blood donors and a stem cell donor to help save her life.
