Ducks Unlimited Manitoba will be adding a new element to its Brandon Bluebills Ladies’ Night this year — Yuk Yuks comedians.
"This year, we are going a different route. We hired Yuk Yuks comedians to do a comedy show after our banquet and auction," Ducks Unlimited fundraising manager Alicia Zurba said of the event, which will be held on Thursday.
The Bluebills group, comprised of women who are involved with Ducks Unlimited, works to protect and raise awareness of Canada’s wetlands.
"We do two ladies nights a year, they aren’t very common. Most people think of men hunting when they see Ducks Unlimited," Zurba said.
For the past few years, the Bluebills have been thinking about organizing an event that will attract more people and a comedy show was among the suggested ideas.
After last year’s event, Zurba thought 2012 would be the best time to hold a comedy show.
All revenue from Ducks Unlimited events funds the organization’s various projects. All the money that the Manitoba branch raises stays in the province and goes toward local projects.
The largest project Ducks Unlimited is involved in is wetland conservation.
"We are trying to get people to see that they should retain wetlands, not drain them," Ducks Unlimited provincial operations manager Bob Grant said.
Grant pointed to last year’s spring flooding when discussing the importance of the province’s wetlands.
According to Grant, wetlands could have helped keep flood waters at bay in 2011. He said wetlands provide additional wildlife habitat and act as a sponge to absorb excess water.
Ducks Unlimited is currently conducting groundbreaking research at Broughton’s Creek, which runs into Rivers Lake. The organization is trying to determine the impact of wetland drainage and how it affects flooding and climate change.
Another large project the group is involved with is keeping the common carp out of Lake Manitoba at Delta Marsh, north of Portage la Prairie. The common carp is an invasive species and Ducks Unlimited is working to keep its numbers down.
The Brandon Bluebills Ladies’ Night banquet and show will be held at the Roadhouse at Canad Inns Brandon at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
To purchase tickets for the event, contact the Ducks Unlimited Brandon office at 729-3500 before Thursday as tickets won’t be available at the door.
