Border officers in Boissevain say a snowmobile was worth a little more than the traveller claimed.
The Canada Border Services Agency released details about the incident yesterday, which happened on Jan. 14. A Manitoba resident, importing a snowmobile at the port of Boissevain, declared that it was worth $4,428.
However, after investigation, officers say that they determined the actual value to be $6,790.
The snowmobile was seized, but returned once a $944 penalty was paid.
If the snowmobile had been properly declared, they say, he would have paid $340.
The incident was one of about a dozen reported by the CBSA in January — mostly south of Winnipeg, and mostly involving underreporting the value of imported goods.
However, officers did refuse entry to several people with criminal records, and say they found suspected child pornography on a truck driver’s cellphone, which they searched after also finding a prohibited switchblade.
The agency says that more than 122,800 travellers, 52,200 passenger vehicles and 15,000 commercial trucks crossed the border in southern Manitoba in January.
