The City of Brandon will be announced as an official Fair Trade Town tonight.
The designation, awarded by Fairtrade Canada, will be presented during this evening’s city council meeting at 7:30 p.m.
The City of Brandon is the second municipality in Manitoba to receive the designation. The Rural Municipality of Gimli was named a Fair Trade Town in July 2009.
The designation is currently supported by 17 local businesses, and seven restaurants and cafés that sell two or more Fairtrade certified products.
The announcement will include remarks by Mayor Shari Decter Hirst, Brandon Fair Trade Town steering committee chairwoman Mireille Saurette, Fair Trade outreach co-ordinator Zack Gross and Canadian Fair Trade Network executive director Sean McHugh.
