Wheat City wins an award while being dubbed 'best-kept secret'

Brandon was awarded the Scotts community of gardeners outstanding achievement at the 2012 Communities in Bloom national awards and symposium in Edmonton on Saturday.

During a stop in Brandon in August, Communities in Bloom judges called the city a "best-kept secret." Two judges toured several areas of Brandon, including Coronation Park, Victorian Gardens at the Daly House Museum and several other private gardens, and they must have stood out as the award recognizes outstanding public and private gardens within a community.

Boissevain, a perennial powerhouse in the competition, won the class of champions in the small communities category, which gives previous winners a chance to compete against other former winners. Boissevain received special mention for the community’s dedication to beautification.

Dauphin also scored high in the same category, receiving a special mention as a community full of gardeners.

Neepawa was honoured for re-establishing a community garden in the international challenge for small communities category.

CFB Shilo was given a special mention for the base’s military family resource centre, while Virden was nominated into the circle of excellence.
