Beginning tonight, The 40 will be transformed into the Brandon University Rehearsal Hall.
The bar has teamed up with BU music students to offer a new concert series every Tuesday night, followed by an open jam session.
Co-ordinator Sean Irvine hopes the new initiative will help students get out of their shell and share their music.
"A lot of us … don’t really get out and share what we’re doing," said Irvine, who is starting his fourth year of a jazz performance degree at BU. "So this was kind of another opportunity for students to … get out and play."
Heidi Howarth, owner of Trails West Motor Inn, has been involved with BU’s School of Music over the years and realized there isn’t enough rehearsal space.
"We’ve got a place that they can perform and it’s also to expose it to the public," Howarth said.
"A lot of people don’t really recognize the different styles of music that are out there, whether it’s jazz or pop or ragtime."
The 40 BU Rehearsal Hall will happen every Tuesday at 9 p.m., featuring musical performances of all genres by BU students, before opening it up to the public.
"We have some jazz, some folk influence, we have a girl for example who’s doing Stevie Wonder, who’s kind of pop/jazz influences," Irvine said.
He hopes the concert series will be like a "house warming" to get people comfortable with playing with each other.
"I hope people will take advantage of this opportunity, both within the school and outside of the school, there’s so much music going on in Brandon, it’s too much of a shame that people don’t share it with anyone else," he said.
The Davidson Project will kick off the first night.
Shannon Chapman, a BU grad student in jazz performance, plays the tenor sax with the group. She said getting out and performing is key for music students.
"The 40 is a good venue to get comfortable with because they do host all sorts of acts," she said. "Chances are at some time during your music degree you’ll be asked to play with a group there, so it’s good to get comfortable with the stage and the size of the room and the lights and things like that."
