BU to host vaccine information session

Should I get the flu shot?

It’s a common question you may ask around this time of year, especially in the wake of an anti-immunization campaign by a Hollywood celebrity.

Brandon University is a good place to find answers, during a public information session on Monday.

“Many people don’t understand vaccines,” says Dr. Bernadette Ardelli of the BU faculty of science.

“Even my parents ask me if they should get the flu shot. They fear the vaccine itself will make them sick.”

Ardelli has recruited Dr. Peter Pieroni, clinical microbiologist with Prairie Mountain Health, to speak on the history and benefits of vaccines, as part of a project by BU students to raise awareness.

“There is a need to debunk the myths surrounding vaccines and get the facts out there,” says Ardelli, citing concerns raised by talk-show host Jenny McCarthy, who claims that some immunizations may be linked to autism.

The Toronto Public Health authority took McCarthy to task through social media this past summer for her efforts to convince parents to stop immunizing their children.

The information session will be held in BU’s Brodie Science Building, Room 3-18, beginning at 9:30 a.m. All are welcome to attend.
