Brandon University will be part of a national research project about immigration, especially into small and mid-sized communities.
The study, which will see BU partnering with other universities across the country, will be a seven-year look at newcomers to Canada, including attracting, settling and integrating them.
Bill Ashton, director of BU’s Rural Development Institute, is chairing the Prairie node of the study and says that it dovetails with the institute’s strategic directive.
“We know that only a small percentage of newcomers settle in rural Canada, while the vast majority locate to Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver,” Ashton said. “This study will allow us to drill down into the challenges of rural immigration, including language training, housing and a host of other factors which may not be present in big cities.”
The university’s acting vice-president, Dean Care, said he is pleased that BU is a partner.
“Being a rural-based university, BU is well positioned to make a significant contribution to this project, especially one with such relevance to our local community,” Care said.
The $12.5-million study was initiated at the University of Western Ontario.
