The construction industry in Brandon and area is roaring ahead to start the year.
Statistics compiled by the Brandon planning department show that nearly $12.2 million in construction permits were issued to the end of January 2014 — well up from $9.8 million issued the year before.
That amount is spread over 55 permits in the city, which is down from the 77 issued in the first month of 2013. The value of strictly residential construction dipped a very slight amount, although commercial construction of a $2.65-million 24-plex on First Street North helped boost the total number of dwelling unit starts so far this year to 39, which is up from the two dozen that started in January last year.
Other significant construction projects started last month include fire alarm upgrades at Assiniboine Community College’s Victoria Avenue East campus worth $2.27 million and the start of $2.89 million in renovations to the former Convergys building.
