Burglar sent to cooler following booze heist

It was a climbing feat worthy of Spider-Man, but this burglar was up to no good as he stole dozens of bottles of liquor.

In the end, though, he wound up behind bars for all his efforts.

“It took some degree of sophistication, and perhaps degree of planning to follow through on this break and enter,” Judge Donovan Dvorak told the burglar as he sentenced him in Brandon court earlier this week. “It’s amazing what efforts you took in order to get alcohol and a small amount of cash.”

Brayden Lee Farquhar, 25, pleaded guilty to break and enter and commit theft.

Crown attorney Grant Hughes said that, sometime on Oct. 14-16, Farquhar got into the Keystone Centre through an unlocked exterior door and entered the executive suites at Westman Place.

To get into the suites, Farquhar climbed up to the roof and made his way across the rafters above the ice.

Once inside the suite area, he went into the women’s washroom and kicked a hole through the wall to get into the executive servery room. The room is used to store food and beverages for those who attend events in the executive boxes.

Farquhar then pried open the doors to the liquor and petty-cash cabinet and made off with 39 bottles of liquor worth $1,700, plus $500 cash.

Hughes didn’t mention how police managed to identify a suspect, but Farquhar was later arrested at the Brandon jail, where he was being held on unrelated charges.

He admitted to the theft, but claimed he only stole 25 bottles of liquor and $25.

Defence lawyer Ryan Fawcett said Farquhar was intoxicated at the time of his crime.

Dvorak sentenced Farquhar to six months in jail minus some time for pre-sentence custody, leaving four months to serve.

Farquhar, however, also remains in custody while pending on his other unrelated charges.
