BU's health studies gets faculty status

Brandon University has a new faculty. The former school of health studies has been bumped up a notch and is now an official faculty.

It marks a special achievement for the dean of the faculty, Dean Care, who said it was one of his main goals when he arrived at BU in 2008.

“We used to be a department way back, then became a school in the 1990s. Here it is 15 years later and this is the recognition of achievement and the natural evolution of an academic unit,” Care said. “For me, it was about setting a higher standard — for research productivity, scholarly work, like publications and presentations, and teaching enhancement approaches.”

The change, which reflects increased enrolment, more research and better-educated professors, was passed by the university's senate at its last meeting.

“Achieving faculty status for Health Studies represents a tremendous accomplishment,” said Noreen Ek, chair of the psych nursing department. “It means our faculty have advanced significantly in their pursuit of research and have achieved significant levels of funding.”

Meanwhile, the results of a feasibility study into the creation of a medical school at Brandon University have yet to be made public.

The study is looking at a variety of options, including a stand-alone medical school in Brandon, a satellite program expansion from the University of Manitoba in partnership with BU, and a continuation or expansion of existing models of rotational and educational experiences.

A recommendation report was originally supposed to be submitted to the Council on Post-Secondary Education on March 31, but a university committee has been given two extensions to complete the work and to allow committee representatives in Brandon and Winnipeg to meet.

BU president Deborah Poff previously told the Sun the committee was to meet on July 3. Poff could not be reached in time for comment yesterday.
