Car fundraiser nets $12K for Erickson school project

Before Monday, about the best thing Brandon resident Jill Pearns had ever won was a used television. So winning a new 2012 Ford Focus is quite the step up.

Pearns won the car as part of a fundraiser by the Erickson Elementary School Parent Advisory Council (EESPAC), which is raising money for a new playground at Erickson Elementary School.

“We were really excited when we found out we won. I bought three tickets and we received the keys on Monday,” Pearns said.

The car, presented on Monday by EESPAC member Leslie Roesch and Kelleher Ford sales consultant Al Twerdochlib, was on display at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair in March, during which tickets were sold.

The event was quite successful — EESPAC raised a total of $35,000 in ticket sales. After paying for the car, which was offered at cost, with a $3,000 additional discount, the parent advisory council was able to put $12,000 toward the new playground.

The group has been attempting to find new and unique ways to generate funds, a difficult task given that Erickson is a community of only 435 residents.

Roesch says the car giveaway idea was the most successful fundraiser her group has held to date.

“We decided we needed to work smarter and not harder to raise the money, we needed something that would branch out to more than just our community of Erickson,” Roesch said. “We needed to find something that would appeal to a bigger crowd of more than what we have to offer, that’s how we came up with the idea to give away a new car.”

As successful as the event was, Erickson is still more than $30,000 away from having enough money to build the new playground.
