Shots that pierced a Carberry home — narrowly missing two people inside — were fired as revenge for insulting graffiti.
The gunman was a young man who had previously been convicted of breaking into a home and stealing women’s underwear.
He fired the bullets at the house of the man he believed to be behind graffiti that made fun of him and his unusual crime.
“As one could imagine, that particular break and enter offence earned him some scorn within his small community,” Crown attorney Rich Lonstrup said of the gunman who recently pleaded guilty in Brandon Court of Queen’s Bench.
On Jan. 30, the man pleaded guilty to recklessly firing a gun into a Carberry house.
Lonstrup told Justice John Menzies that he’ll seek the minimum four-year prison term, minus 60 days pre-sentence custody.
The offender is currently out of custody and on house arrest as he awaits sentencing later this year.
He was 19 years old at the time of the shooting, but can’t legally be named if the motive for the shooting is to be shared.
It stems from a separate crime he committed when he was a youth.
In October 2009, he burglarized a Carberry home and took women’s underwear.
He later told police that he’d sold the undergarments to an unidentified buyer for $20 each.
In July 2010, he received an 18-month conditional discharge with 60 hours of community service.
Someone then spray-painted graffiti on a town wall that made fun of the panty burglar and called him a “loser.”
That led to a confrontation between the burglar and the man he believed responsible for the message.
In the early morning of Sept. 5, 2011, the conflict escalated when the burglar, still on probation, armed himself with a .22-calibre rifle and 18 bullets.
He took a position in a driveway across the road from his enemy’s Simcoe Street home and fired six shots at it before the aging gun jammed.
Four of the bullets hit the home, and three pierced the living room window just above a couch where the homeowner and young woman lay following a party at the house.
One bullet was later found in the couch and another behind it. Another was found behind the television.
After the shots were fired, the gunman walked to the edge of town and threw the gun into some bushes.
He later confessed to police and claimed that he didn’t intend to shoot anyone, he just meant to scare the resident.
Sentencing has been set for April to allow the preparation of a pre-sentence report.
