A 14-year-old Carberry boy was taken to a Winnipeg hospital with serious internal injuries after he was hit and pinned by a truck Tuesday afternoon.
The incident happened at roughly 12:45 p.m. at the Carberry Community Hall.
Carberry RCMP Cpl. Jarrid St-Pierre said a 17-year-old male, also from the Carberry area, was driving the truck when he lost control and collided with the south side of the building, pinning the victim between the wall and the truck.
Charges of dangerous driving causing bodily harm are being contemplated, St-Pierre said.
The victim is a Grade 9 student at Carberry Collegiate. He was first taken to Brandon Regional Health Centre before being transferred to Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg for treatment.
Principal Kathy Bjarnason said the incident is upsetting to students and staff at the school.
"Any time anyone’s hurt, we’re a pretty small community and a small school, so everyone knows everyone else," she said. "We were able to provide community mental health worker support (Wednesday) for students who were at the scene, and also for students who may be struggling with just the unknown and the trauma of having a peer injured in this way."
An anonymous tip received by the Brandon Sun indicated that the incident may be the result of bullying and police say they are still investigating that possibility.
"We’ve had some kids come forward on some issues but … people don’t want to be the rat," St-Pierre said. "We’re considering everything at this point."
