Brandon University is exploring new opportunities in India as part of a provincial trade mission now underway in the world’s second most populous country.
Dean Care, acting vice-president (academic and provost), is visiting 10 Indian universities with the goal of increasing BU’s enrolment — a key objective in the university’s five-year strategic plan.
"Our primary mission on this trip is to recruit students," Care said. "With a population of more than 1.2 billion, India is 1,000 universities short in meeting domestic demands, so the opportunity for international recruitment is enormous."
Care says a "2+2" model, where students would take two years of a program in India and two years at BU, would benefit students and faculty in both countries. Faculty research partnerships will also be discussed.
To bolster BU’s existing international office, a new director of international activities will be in place by the start of the 2013-14 academic year.
BU president Deborah Poff anticipates new partnerships from the current trade mission could bring Indian students on-campus as soon as fall 2014.
"International students represent a part of our future and we are investing now to meet that future, in accordance with the university’s BUILD 2010-2015 strategic initiatives," she said.
