Growing up in a family of 18, Bob Cey says he knew from a young age what it meant to be united.
"If you were one that didn’t pull your weight, the other 17 definitely let you know about it," he said.
That early experience, followed by years of volunteerism, has led to Cey being named the 2012 United Way campaign chairman.
"I’m a longtime believer in the United Way and what it stands for, and when I say longtime, I mean a long time … It goes back 50 some years," Cey said Wednesday.
"It goes back to where I was raised on a farm in Saskatchewan. That’s where my parents instilled in me what United Way really means."
Cey is a senior consultant with Investors Group. He has been involved with the United Way of Brandon & District since 1997 when he moved to the community. He is a past member of the board of directors and dedicated volunteer.
"Recruiting the right person for the role of campaign chair is not something we take lightly," said United Way board chair Greg Crisanti. "It is important to find an individual who demonstrates a commitment to community, in both their personal and professional life. We have been fortunate again this year to find someone who exemplifies just that."
United Way concentrates its funding efforts on five target areas: helping children and youth succeed, strong and supportive families, self-sufficient individuals, vital and safe neighbourhoods and supporting vulnerable and aging populations.
"Through education, literacy training and job readiness assistance, we are helping to give people a hand up — not a handout," Cey said.
"Even in good economic times, we have people that are falling further and further behind. Many of these people are working, but just don’t have the income to make ends meet."
Cey takes over from past chair Kevin Martin, whose leadership saw the 2010 and 2011 campaigns achieve record numbers. The 2011 campaign raised $706,000.
"Year after year, this community has shown United Way the strenth of its compassion and generosity," Cey said.
"Come September, when United Way officially launches its annual campaign, we are confident that Brandon will come together again and support the fabric that ties this community together."
The United Way 2012 campaign will kick off on Sept. 20.
