Charge laid after cops find suspected truck thief in tree

After a man stole a truck, he drove past the scene of the crime while city police were still drawing up a report.

According to the Brandon Police Service, a late-model Dodge Ram was reported missing from out front of a business on the 700-block of First Street just after 5 a.m. Saturday. The driver popped into the business for a short time, police say, leaving the keys inside of the unlocked truck. When he went back outside, the truck was missing.

While police were gathering information, they saw the truck drive right past them on First Street. Officers chased after the truck before the driver abandoned it and took off running.

Police say the 26-year-old suspect was found hiding in a tree on the 1300-block of First Street and was arrested, charged with motor vehicle theft and jailed.

The suspect was scheduled to be released later on Saturday and has a court date set for Feb. 24.
