Numerous charges are pending after a New Year’s Day ordeal in which a man allegedly terrorized staff and patients at the Russell hospital.
RCMP were called to the Russell Health Centre at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and arrived to find a man threatening hospital staff and patients.
Police say the man had attended the hospital for treatment for injuries sustained in an early-morning snowmobile crash.
A doctor and at least two nurses were treating him when he became violent, assaulted them and then left the room.
He then assaulted a young girl, chased a child and threatened other patients, including some who are elderly.
Police say he was violent with an RCMP officer on the scene and the suspect was shocked with a stun gun to get him under control.
He wasn’t seriously injured and, as of Wednesday afternoon, he remained in custody.
The motive for the assaults remains unclear but substance abuse is considered a factor.
RCMP say charges are pending against a 43-year-old Waywayseecappo First Nation man.
