City considers solar light expansion

Coun. Jan Chaboyer (Green Acres) would like to see more solar lighting in the city’s public places.

“This is great for promoting green and sustainable practices throughout the city, to reduce energy costs,” she said.

Solar lighting was installed at the East End Dog Park in 2011 and has been met with positive feedback.

“We’ve had no problems with it whatsoever, even during these cold times,” said Tom Keep, the city’s environmental initiatives manager. “It’s been on every night. About once a month we do a drive-by just to see if it’s still working and it does, it lasts the whole night.”

The city is looking into expanding its use of solar lights, as requests have been received for lighting at the Park Avenue Dog Park, Hanbury Hill Dog Park, East End Toboggan Hill and the Sugar Bowl on 34th Street as well as some residential areas.

Chaboyer said solar lighting could work well on smaller walking paths.

“People want it, in certain specific targeted areas so they feel safe and secure,” she said.

A particular path where Chaboyer would like to see lighting added is a small walkway between Cornwallis Crescent and Balmoral Bay.

“Plus I just think it’s great also to be able to do activities in our long dark winters,” Chaboyer said. “Who wants to toboggan in the dark and skate in the dark … It’s always fun when you can extend your hours of enjoyment outside, but you need a little bit of lighting, the moon isn’t shining all the time.”
