Brandon City Council will be considering on Monday whether to spend another $538,000 to demolish the Brandon Inn and remove hazardous materials such as asbestos from the site.
If approved at Monday’s council meeting, the money would be transferred from a land acquisition fund to a developmental services operating account.
A city council report states that the removal of hazardous materials from the site, which must be done before demolition, has already cost $322,310.24. However, when the work started, more hazardous materials were found in asbestos wall finishings, asbestos flooring and lead ceiling panels that were hidden behind decorations that had been installed over the lifespan of the building. For that reason, the city will have to pay an additional $538,000 to finish the job before demolition can take place.
Also on Monday’s agenda will be a required quarterly report on the city’s water supply. In that report, it is revealed that the city’s water supply in certain sample locations has greater than the legal limit of 0.1 milligrams per litre of trihalomethanes (THM). Water leaving the water plant passed two of three tests conducted in February, May and August and averaged 0.088 mg/L of THM, the Chalet, Waverly, the Civic Works and River Heights sample test sites all failed those three tests conducted.
Chalet’s test station averaged 0.163 mg/L, Waverly averaged 0.158 mg/L, Civic Works averaged 0.153 mg/L and River Heights averaged 0.154 mg/L. The worst results came on Aug. 8, where the water plant sample was 0.148 mg/L. All other samples were more than double the legal limit: Chalet was 0.238 mg/L, Waverly was 0.243 mg/L, Civic Works was 0.222 and River Heights was 0.225 mg/L.
The city has submitted a compliance plan with the Office of Drinking Water.
Aside from those issues, the city will debate a funding allocation in the 2013 budget for the Keystone Centre and the start of an amendment process of the urban design standards and guidelines bylaw.
The council meeting will start at city hallat 7:30 p.m. Monday.
