Memorial items around gravesites in the Brandon Municipal Cemetery should be moved in the next few weeks, the city says, as staff gear up for a fall cleaning.
The cleanup will begin Oct. 15, and staff at the cemetery say that all items should be gone by that date, and only headstones should remain.
Many people memorialize loved ones with grave decorations like artificial flowers, ornaments, solar lights, plant hooks or stuffed animals, but the city this year plans to review cemetery bylaws and may change the rules around what is permitted.
Although flowers in a vase are allowed to be placed near any gravesite, the city says it’s best to check the cemetery website or to call the cemetery office at 204-729-2150 before placing anything else.
Glass is never permitted in the cemetery.
The city cleans up the cemetery twice per year, generally on April 15 and Oct. 15.
