City halls eyes expansion of compost project

Compost collection schedules will change on Oct. 1, as part of the switch to a city-wide four-day garbage collection cycle.

For those taking part in the city’s pilot project, compost will now be picked up on the same day as garbage and recycling.

City public works manager Ian Broome said there are plans to expand its compost collection pilot project, if the provincial government approves a funding plan for 5,500 composting containers.

“We are going to put out another 1,000 containers, possibly between now and spring and will start with another 1,000 on board pending funding from the province,” Broome said. “We feel we can put another 1,000 out of what we have in stock right now.”

This changes the compost collection cycle, as previously, compost collection was on Day 3 of the five-day collection cycle and sometimes collection was only on alternating weeks as one half of the city was serviced on Day 3.

“For the rest of this year, composting materials will be collected on the day your refuse and recycling is collected,” Broome said. “This spring, we will move forward with different changes for collection dates and frequency.”

Those interested in having their compostable materials collected can sign up through the city’s website, by finding the sanitation link on brandon.ca.

Broome said the bins will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis, with the hope of having more bins available in the future.
