At 8:32 a.m. on Jan. 1, Brandon’s first baby of 2013 was born at the Brandon Regional Health Centre.

Quinn Jonathon Naturkach weighed seven pounds, 13 ounces and is 21.5 inches long, and was resting peacefully in his parents’ arms when members of the media and the Rotary Club came to visit on Tuesday afternoon.

His middle name is after his father, Jonathon Naturkach, but the couple said coming up with a first name was a bit of a struggle.

"My mom came up with Quinn around six months ago, and we never came up with anything else," said Kendra Carnegie, Quinn’s mother. "I think she was trying to help (Jonathon) out — he had a friend Quincy that he wanted to name him after, but I didn’t like it."

The family was presented a gift basket put together by the Rotary Club of Brandon Sunset valued at around $500. The basket includes donations of products and gift certificates from several local business.

"It’s very easy to get people to donate. You go into a business and say ‘I’m here for the new baby’ and they go running to grab something off the shelf, or write up a gift certificate," club president Dayle Hughson said.

This is Hughson’s second year presenting the basket to the new year’s baby and family.

"It’s one of the perks of being president. It’s great, everyone loves being involved with the new baby," she said.

Carnegie and Naturkach said they were surprised about the basket.

"I’ve heard a lot of great things about that baby Magic Bullet thing, I’m excited!" she said. "We never expected anything like this."

The family had already been visited by both their parents, and some friends, and were expecting more friends to visit into the evening.

"It’s a happy day," said Carnegie.
