The City of Brandon’s innovative use of GIS software was front and centre at a recent national conference in Regina.
Stephanie Colli, the city’s GIS developer, ‘mapped out’ the innovation during her keynote address at the Environmental Sciences Research Institute 2012 User Conference last week.
The city’s information technology department uses ESRI Canada’s GIS software for its mapping needs.
Colli’s address to the crowd of about 200 ESRI customers — entitled “Brandon The small city that is big in GIS” — focused on her work over the past year with ESRI’s community maps initiative to create a number of online applications and interactive maps.
“The ESRI’s community maps initiative is a free and efficient framework for organizations to share their geographic information with the online public,” Colli noted.
“This information can be used to create online applications and interactive maps. Today, we leverage greatly the public community maps for our website-based interactive maps. Currently, we have eight online maps such as recreation, ward boundaries and recycling drop-off maps.”
She said she hopes to inspire other users of ESRI software across the country to undertake the same innovations.
Colli was asked to present last week’s keynote address after ESRI Canada president Alex Miller saw her present at the company’s Winnipeg User Conference this past spring.
