City's green cart compost program kicks off next week

Brandon’s popular compost collection program will roll out for the season next week.

Collection of the green-lidded compost carts will start Tuesday and will run weekly for the first month of the program, when spring cleanup is in full force. Participating households will have compost pickup on the same day as their trash and recycling carts are picked up.

Starting May 27, however, the schedule will switch to biweekly pickup during the summer lull.

Each weekday will see green carts picked up only from half of the households on that day’s route. The other half will be picked up on alternate weeks.

With fall cleanup expected to swing back into high gear, compost pickup will again become weekly on Oct. 14, and the program is expected to end for the season on the week of Nov. 4.

Households will get a map and a 2014 collection calendar to help keep them on track. They’re responsible for putting the bins out before 6 a.m. on collection days, and to remove them from the curb within 24 hours.

“The improvements in collection frequency are a direct result of a survey we conducted earlier this year with the program’s participating households,” said Scott Haddow, who is with the solid waste collection services division of the city’s sanitation department.

“Participants told us that they tended to fill their green carts more during the busy times of spring and fall yard cleanup, so these scheduling improvements have been made in order to serve both those in our program and our collection crews in a more convenient way.”

The program, which expanded dramatically last year, currently has 3,464 participating households, and is again accepting applications, with a total cap of 6,000.

When fully operational, the city expects it to help in diverting more than half of its total waste away from the dump. Last year, the green cart program kept nearly 830 tonnes of organic material out of the dump. It was instead turned into compost for city and community use.

More information on the program is available online at brandon.ca/departments/operations/sanitation/composting.
