City's public budget forum will be held on Feb. 6

It’s not quite “speak now or forever hold your peace,” but chances are running out for the public to comment on Brandon’s proposed 2012 budget.

The budget, which has already gone through a round of public comment and debate, was tentatively set to be approved before tax-hike fears began to attract a public backlash, including an online petition.

Bowing to pressure, city councillors are now set to reopen the budget debate at a special meeting on Feb. 7, but they are also inviting members of the public to an open discussion forum the day before.

No public presentations will be heard at the budget debate meeting itself.

The public forum will be held in the main foyer of city hall from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. on Feb. 6.

It will consist of a brief overview of the current proposed budget and possible ways to cut it down. A question-and-answer period for the public will follow. The mayor, city councillors and members of the administration will be on hand to answer questions.

A regular meeting of city council will be held that same night, starting at 7:30 p.m.

The special budget debate meeting will start at 6 p.m. on Feb. 7, and, although there will be no opportunity for public presentations, it will be open to the public.

After that, a public hearing on the budget is required by law. It is scheduled for March 5. Final approval of the budget is then scheduled for April 2. Both dates are regular city council meetings.
