Roxanne Trumbley, board member of COR Enterprises, and Corey Demontagne clean up the grounds of the Keystone Centre on Tuesday afternoon.
The Keystone Centre grounds are a little greener now that volunteers have hand-picked garbage in the area.
Over the past two days, 10 volunteers put on gloves to pick up litter for World Hands Day, which officially took place this past weekend.
The Keystone Centre was the last of 11 sections of Brandon to receive the beauty treatment, as this weekend’s Shrine Circus delayed the cleanup.
But picking up the garbage doesn’t stink too much — volunteers from 11 community groups involved with the city-wide pickup will each receive $500 for their efforts from United Commercial Travelers.
"(UCT is) a fraternal organization that makes money though (activities like) bingo and hotdog sales," UCT member Roxanne Trumbley said.
That money is then given back to the community through initiatives like the clean-up.
Trumbley was there to lend a hand with employees and clients of COR Enterprises Inc, a vocational training centre for developmentally challenged adults.
Raymond, a COR client and cleanup volunteer, said he "likes the fresh air," even while picking up the most common litter item: straws.
"It’s all that fast food stuff — picking up coffee cups and McDonald’s bags," Trumbley said.
"These are things that don’t need to be thrown on the street."
Next week, however, Brandon residents will be encouraged to bring other "junk" items to the street for the free giveaway weekend.
The City of Brandon has marked May 26 and 27 as the official dates for the curbside giveaway.
People can take goods they no longer want, clearly label them "free" and leave them out for someone to claim.
"So as you’re driving by, you can pick it up," said Richard Greer, community development co-ordinator for the City of Brandon.
"It’s a modern way of recycling, and it keeps it out of our landfill."
This year’s weekend has been a long time coming, after last year’s event was cancelled because of the flood.
While the weekend is a chance to free up some space, not all items are giveaway worthy.
"Some items do have a life span, like children’s car seats," Greer said.
Notably, any furniture infested with bedbugs should steer clear of the curb.
For those whose unused junk doesn’t catch the attention of passersby, all giveaway goods must be removed from the roadside by 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 27.
For those who don’t, the goods could be considered litter and tickets may be issued.
If the leftover items are not welcome back inside the home, residents can purchase a bulk item ticket from the Eastview landfill, Civic Services Complex (900 Richmond Ave.), or the city hall treasury department.
After that, pickup appointments can be scheduled with the city.
