Cooking classes showcase food, cultures

If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to cook traditional ethnic foods from around the globe, here’s your chance.

Westman Immigrant Services is offering a series of World Cooking Lessons, beginning Saturday.

“They will be preparing traditional dishes,” said Jaime Chinchilla, cultural diversity facilitator with WIS. “It’s not going to be the mainstream food that we eat here in Canada, but it would be special dishes with special ingredients.”

A total of six lessons are scheduled to take place at Knox United Church. Colombia kicks it off on Saturday, followed by Ethiopia on Oct. 20 at 11 a.m., El Salvador on Nov. 10, China on Nov. 24, Honduras on Dec. 15 and Ukraine on Dec. 22.

Each session has 12 spots, at a cost of $10 each. The WIS project is supported by the City of Brandon.

The funds will help pay for interpreters and teachers.

“If that’s successful, then we might extend it to another round of lessons,” Chinchilla said.

Chinchilla said immigrant women who participated in the last International Women’s Food and Craft Market will teach their best cooking secrets.

“It’s a woman that’s recently immigrated to Brandon, so it’s a chance for them to find some value and empower them to contribute to the community,” Chinchilla said. “So it’s added value on the lesson. They are actually helping the community by registering and being a part of this.”

Ana Beltran came to Brandon two years ago from Colombia. She will be teaching the first lesson on Saturday.

“I’m so excited to show my food and my culture,” she said. “I want to know if the people will like it.”

Beltran is planning on teaching the participants a traditional Colombian beef dish.

Chinchilla said in addition to some new cooking skills, participants are sure to learn about other cultures.

“They’ll learn some of the traditions of some of the people that are living in Brandon, which is really important because it will help to integrate and to know more about our new neighbours,” he said. “This is a great initiative … and hopefully it works and we can keep doing it, have more countries and more students and make the program grow, and that’s only possible if people have a positive response.”
