Brandon Police Service is investigating the death of an inmate at the Brandon Correctional Centre on Sunday.
There are more questions than answers regarding the suspicious death of an inmate at the Brandon Correctional Centre on Sunday.
Shortly after 10 a.m., police responded to the provincial jail to investigate the death of a 39-year-old man who died under "suspicious circumstances," police said in a press release.
"The causes at this point are unknown," Brandon Police Service Const. Kirby Sararas said.
While the exact cause is unknown, police did describe the death as suspicious.
"Nothing has been ruled out. We can’t rule out foul play until the results of the autopsy," Sararas said.
"The autopsy will narrow down which way the investigation will go, but right now (the investigators) are treating it as they would any suspicious death. As more information comes to light, (the investigators) will follow that information which ever way it dictates."
At suppertime last night, officers were still on scene at the jail investigating the death.
Sararas couldn’t comment where in the jail the death took place or why the inmate was incarcerated, but did expect more information to be released in the coming days.
The Brandon Sun contacted a provincial spokesperson with the Department of Justice, who was aware of the death, but chose not to comment due to the police investigation.
