A portion of city path, in red, is slated to be sold to neighbouring property owners. The path has been cited in the past as being plagued by vandalism, vulgar graffiti and recurring drug/alcohol use. It has been closed by fencing since last summer and will now be absorbed into the yards of 42 Balmoral Bay and 320 Cornwallis Cres. The pathways in blue will remain open.
A walking path in Brandon’s south end formerly plagued by vandalism and graffiti will be permanently closed.
The path connecting Cornwallis Crescent, McLeod Drive and Balmoral Bay was closed using a temporary chain link fence in August 2013, following complaints from residents.
Two homeowners living adjacent to the path have agreed to purchase a portion of the path area to expand their property lines. City council voted unanimously Monday night in favour of the sale to close the path permanently.
One homeowner on Balmoral Bay will pay $4,000 for the 3,100-square-foot portion, while the second homeowner on Cornwallis Crescent will buy the 2,200-square-foot portion for roughly $2,800.
According to the city’s development services department, the homeowners would also have to share the cost of the closure in the amount of $3,500 and a $500 administration fee.
Both homeowners have agreed to fence off their newly purchased portions to permanently close the walkway.
A Canada Post community mailbox will have to be relocated due to this change, at a cost of approximately $2,500. The city will cover that cost, as well as the cost of removing the pavement and placement of sod.
Residents in the area appeared before city council last August, and outlined recurring problems.
A petition was presented, which included 57 households (111 signatures) in favour of closing the walkway.
The petition gave examples of serious incidents that have occurred in recent years, including kicked-in fence boards, offensive graffiti on a new fence, noise, rowdiness, selling drugs, drinking alcohol and verbal abuse when teens are asked to move.
