Local businessman and longtime Brandonite Barry Cullen will be vying for a seat on Brandon City Council this fall.

Cullen, owner of Keywest Photo on Rosser Avenue, plans to run for the Victoria ward seat, which will be vacated after current Coun. Murray Blight retires.

"I think the timing is right now," Cullen said. "I had considered it last go-around, but it was just four years too soon."

Cullen has lived in the Victoria ward for more than 30 years with his wife Donna and raised three children.

"We live right beside (Riverheights) school, our kids have gone there," he said. "We bike there, we drive there every day and have for 30 years, there’s not too many things that we aren’t aware of in that ward."

Cullen grew up in Hargrave and went to school in Virden before moving to Brandon about 35 years ago.

He is the founder of Keywest Photo, which has been in operation for 25 years. Cullen is past president of Brandon Chamber of Commerce, has served as president of the Keystone Lions Club and was chair of the local CNIB board of directors. Cullen was the United Way of Brandon and District chairperson in 2009.

Cullen said he considers himself to be "fiscally responsible," but at the same time, "socially compassionate."

"Anybody that knows me knows that I’m artistic, a creative guy, so when it comes to music, or … theatre or just any of those kind of things, I probably look at things a little differently than somebody else," he said.

Cullen said he feels "extremely rooted" in Victoria ward, and the City of Brandon.

"I’m looking forward, if given the opportunity, to serve the ward," he said. "I would love to do that."
