Curb hospital visits if fighting cold, health official advises

The Prairie Mountain Health region is asking those experiencing a cold, stomach-like symptoms, cough or fever to reconsider their planned visits to local area hospitals and personal care homes.

“We are just encouraging people who feel sick to stay home,” said Dr. Sandra Allison, medical officer of health in Brandon. “It’s just not good practice to bring your illness into the hospital.”

Flu season is still in full swing, putting those already sick at risk.

“Hospital and personal care home residents may not be well enough themselves to fight off potential illness,” read the public service announcement distributed by the Prairie Mountain Health region on Jan. 21. “When entering facilities please pay attention to any signage that will alert you to any restrictions on visitation.”

Prairie Mountain Health is also advising visitors to wash their hands before, during and after they leave.
