Investigators are still working to determine how and why a Brandon man was struck and killed by a train.
“We’re not ruling anything in or out ... It’s currently under investigation, we still don’t know what exactly occurred,” Brandon Police Service Const. Ron Burgess said Tuesday morning.
Police and paramedics were called to the Canadian Pacific Railway line near First Street and Pacific Avenue around 9:15 p.m. on Monday.
CPR spokesman Kevin Hrysak said the crew of a westbound train, which was entering the CP railyard, reported seeing a body lying beside the main line and halted the train.
A CP Rail employee initially reported that it was believed that a child had been hit by a train, but police determined that it was the body of a 24-year-old man that lay across the CPR line, just east of the First Street Bridge.
Police described the man as “obviously deceased.”
A white sheet used to cover the body could be seen lying beside the wheels of a freight train on Monday evening.
However, investigators believe the man wasn’t hit by the train they found at the scene.
As of Tuesday, they were still working to determine what train had hit the man and when.
Hrysak said the company checked with the crews of trains that had passed through the area but none reported hitting anyone.
Meanwhile, the victim’s family has declined comment at this time, but confirmed his identity.
The deceased had recent run-ins with the law, and earlier this year he’d told authorities that he was going to kill himself.
That said, Burgess said police haven’t not ruled out any possibility at this point — including suicide, accident or foul play.
The Brandon Sun has agreed not to name the man at this time, at his family’s request.
