Donations continue to help Christmas Cheer Registry

The Brandon-Westman Christmas Cheer Registry has $50,000 left over in donations from this year. But that is no reason not to continue donating, said the organization’s treasurer.

“We used last year’s donations to pay for this year, and the year before’s to pay for last year,” Barb Hohn said. “It’s security in case we have a particularily bad year.”

In Winnipeg this year, the Winnipeg Christmas Cheer Board announced it was roughly $60,000 short of its annual goal. The organization received a $50,000 donation from Sagkeeng First Nation Lotto 6/49 winners Kirby and Marie Fontaine on Dec. 27.

“We certainly don’t have that great of a need (as the Winnipeg Christmas Cheer Board), but every donation, big or small, helps,” said Hohn.

This year, the Brandon-Westman Christmas Cheer Registry delivered hampers of food and gifts to around 1,200 applicants, more than 300 of which were adopted out through The Salvation Army’s Adopt-A-Family program and individual adoptions.

“We fill as many hampers as we get requests for,” Hohn said.

Each hamper is different depending on the size, needs and preferences of each family. Most of the money donated is spent on food and toys.

“The people of Brandon and Westman are always so generous — not just in donations, but their time volunteering and making sure we can provide a happy Christmas to families,“ said Sandra Wray, an office clerk at the Registry.

Names of those who donate to the Brandon-Westman Christmas Cheer Registry can be seen in the Community News Edition, which appears in Thursday’s Brandon Sun.
