A former military man — who may be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder — has been granted bail as he awaits sentencing on assault charges.
Police had to Taser Jonathon Lewis Gall, 25, as they arrested him for a fight that erupted when he tried to convince another man not to go to Afghanistan.
“He kept telling police to shoot him in the head,” Crown attorney Rich Lonstrup said in court last week.
Lonstrup said RCMP were called to an assault in Douglas on June 10. Gall had gotten into an argument with another man who was discussing his deployment to Afghanistan.
Lonstrup said that Gall, a former member of the military, had served in Afghanistan and didn’t want the other man to go.
During the fight that followed, Gall punched the victim in the face and kneed him in the temple and mouth.
The victim suffered a broken nose and chipped tooth.
Gall then fled and police, who were informed that their suspect suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), found him in a neighbouring home where he squared off with officers as though he was going to fight.
He then grabbed a serrated knife, held it to his own throat and told police to shoot him in the head.
Police, however, stunned Gall with a Taser and he was handcuffed and arrested.
Gall’s common-law partner or spouse was present during the incident, at a time when he was on court orders to have no contact with her.
He also wasn’t allowed to have weapons.
On May 6, Gall had assaulted his partner by punching and choking her, court heard.
No details of his military service were shared in court as he pleaded guilty to assault charges and other offences.
Following court, defence lawyer Bob Harrison confirmed that his client had been in the army and had served in Afghanistan.
It’s believed PTSD played a role in Gall’s offences, Harrison said.
Explaining the June 10 incident, Gall told court that he panicked and lashed out after the victim had grabbed his throat.
Judge Krystyna Tarwid ordered a pre-sentence report and set sentencing for Sept. 10.
Gall was granted bail as he awaits sentencing.
