VIRDEN — A former teacher’s aide has pleaded guilty for sexual encounters he had with a 14-year-old girl.
The 36-year-old man pleaded guilty in Virden court on Friday to one count of sexual interference for three separate encounters with the girl.
Crown attorney Rich Lonstrup said that, up until the illicit affair was discovered, the man was a teacher’s aide at a Westman First Nation school.
He can’t be named because that could identify the victim who is protected by a publication ban.
Lonstrup noted that the offender was never a teacher’s aide or substitute teacher to the victim.
However, he held a position of trust over the girl during the assaults. Two of the sexual encounters happened during a sports field trip in April 2011 — the girl was an athlete and the offender a chaperone.
Lonstrup said the man and the girl had initially met at school, played ping-pong together and exchanged emails.
The first encounter happened while the offender and the victim were travelling by train to Churchill.
The man, who was drinking, sat beside the girl and offered her a sip. He then kissed and groped her.
Lonstrup said this was done with the girl’s permission, but she was too young to legally consent.
On the way back, the travellers stopped for the night at a Winnipeg hotel where the chaperone and the girl had sex in one of the rooms.
Again, the girl was a willing participant but unable to legally consent.
On April 26, 2011, they kissed during a rendezvous at the Westman First Nation.
Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta ordered a presentence report to look at the offender’s aboriginal background and sentencing has been set for Sept. 28.
Sexual interference carries a minimum sentence of 45 days in jail.
