Penny Gilson has been named chief executive officer of the newly merged western regional health authority.
On Wednesday, Gilson officially accepted the job with the new region, which includes the former Brandon, Parkland and Assiniboine RHAs.
"I see it certainly as an opportunity, but there’s a lot of work to be done and that’s what we’ll be focusing on over the next little while," Gilson said Thursday.
Gilson has 12 years experience as CEO for a Manitoba health region. In 2000, she was appointed to the top job with the South Westman RHA, which was amalgamated with the Marquette RHA in 2002. Since then, Gilson has been CEO with the Assiniboine RHA.
"I’m excited and look forward to doing the best that we can for patients in the western part of Manitoba," she said.
On Thursday, Gilson’s priority was meeting with the senior staff of the three former regions.
"Right now, I’m just getting myself familiar with the new region and … doing as much communication as I can with staff," she said.
"I’m hoping in the very near future to start to talk with communities as well."
The province has eliminated six of the 11 RHAs, and will cut between 30 and 35 executive positions. The move is expected to save the province $10 million over the next three years.
