Family Week kickoff party set for Sunday

The Brandon Healthy Families Team and its associated partners invite all Westman families to Brandon’s third annual celebration of National Family Week.

The kickoff party for the week will take place Sunday from 1 p.m.- 4 p.m. at Princess Park and the Kristopher Campbell Memorial Skateboard Plaza (rain/poor weather venue is New Era School Gym).

Volunteers from many community agencies have been planning and working together for months to offer the Brandon event. Admission is free and the afternoon includes various family activities such as face-painting, community displays and much more.

There’s also main-stage fun by world-renowned children’s entertainer Fred Penner at 2 p.m.

“We’re pleased to have City of Brandon Mayor Shari Decter Hirst bring opening greetings,” says Lisa Ramsay, chairperson of this year’s event planning committee.

“And new this year is folks attending can park in the Town Centre.”

Last year, nearly 500 people attended the National Family Week kickoff event.

National Family Week runs across Canada from Oct. 1-7. It has been celebrated every October since 1985 when it was proclaimed an official week by the Government of Canada.

This year’s theme is “The Grandparent Connection,” which celebrates the role of the grandparent as a nurturer, caregiver, role model, historian and much more.

At a time when the aging population in Canada is becoming larger and more diverse, it is especially fitting to highlight the range of experiences associated with grandparenting.

National Family Week is an opportunity to recognize this shift and understand just what it means to be a grandparent today.
