Father's Pantry plans annual Meal in the Park

Father’s Pantry will be hosting its fifth annual “Meal in the Park” on Good Friday.

However, the Christian-based organization isn’t taking any chances with the weather when it provides this Easter meal for the needy.

The “Meal in the Park,” which is free for people in Brandon with minimal income, will actually be a two-sitting meal in a warm building, according to Wendy Flannigan, president of Father’s Pantry Inc.’s board of directors.

“On the Easter weekend there are four days where the soup kitchen and similar outlets are closed and access to free food is minimalized,” she said.

“Traditionally the meal is served at Princess Park, but due to the cold weather we are experiencing this winter, it was decided to hold it at the Youth for Christ building on 1228 Rosser Ave. and provide the meals in two sittings.”

Good Friday is April 18. The first sitting will be at 1:30 p.m., with the second at 2:15 p.m.

This event will be held in conjunction with Father’s Pantry’s food program Loaves and Fishes, which is held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday throughout the year. Loaves and Fishes provides groceries to families on the weekend, as the soup kitchen is only open on weekdays.

Father’s Pantry Inc. is a Christian-based organization of volunteers. It has no paid staff and relies entirely on community donations.

Some of its sponsors include Bethel Christian Assembly, Blue Hills Bakery, Komfort Kitchen, Waldersee Christ Lutheran Church, City of Brandon, Wilfred Baer (Sidney), Superstore, Canada Safeway, Kuipers, Sobeys and individuals from within the community.

Any overabundance of food is shared with Samaritan House, Helping Hands, the Rivers Loaves and Fishes program, Friendship drop-in Centre, Master’s Moms (Bethel Christian Assembly), Teen Challenge, Joy Smith Foundation Against Human Trafficking, and any other individuals who are in need.

Although Father’s Pantry recently incorporated, it has been in existence for a number of years.

Other programs offered by the organization include Solomon’s Porch, seasonal clothing, and supplies for mothers who need diapers, formula, baby food, clothing and more.
