Feds announce funding for youth employment programs

The federal government announced thousands of dollars in support for a youth jobs program in Westman this week.

Prairie Skills Inc. will receive more than $20,000 from the federal Skills Link program to help youth overcome barriers to employment, Brandon-Souris Conservative MP Merv Tweed announced on behalf of Human Resources Minister Diane Finley. Skills Link is part of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy.

The federal cash will go to support youth in Deloraine, Melita, Boissevain and Killarney to help them gain the skills and knowledge they need to enter and succeed in the job market.

“Our government’s top priorities are job creation, economic growth and long-term prosperity,” Tweed said. “The Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy is helping youth develop the skills and gain the experience they need to get jobs now and prepare for the workforce of tomorrow.”

Participants in the Prairie Skills Inc. project may take part in a variety of employability programs to improve their job skills and will develop individual action plans to help them reach their educational and employment goals.

With an annual budget of more than $300 million, YES helps youth develop employment skills, find jobs and stay employed. YES includes the Skills Link and Career Focus programs and the Canada Summer Jobs initiative, which creates thousands of job opportunities for students every summer.

Economic Action Plan 2012 is providing an additional $50 million over two years to enhance YES through a new initiative that will connect young Canadians with jobs that are in high demand and help them develop tangible skills and gain work experience.
